WEEKLY NEWS FROM VOYC DEVON

I hope that you're all having a good half term. Sadly I have to say a fond farewell to Kerrie Clifford who has recently moved to work full time with Active Devon. We will greatly miss having Kerrie here at the VOYC Office and I would like to thank her for her significant contribution to the work of VOYC over the last three years. I am pleased to say that the final part of Kerrie's work with us was helping me to recruit her succesor. We were fortunate to have a massive response to our recruitment advert and as a result we interviewed four excellent candidates. I am pleased to let you all know that Jeanette Brown has joined us and is already putting out lots of tweets and facebook content. I will let Jeanette introduce herself over the coming weeks. As a result of the staff changes the e-bulletin is being re-designed and so please bear with us over the coming weeks.

Best Wishes,

Mark Goodman mark@voycdevon.org.uk

Research from Exeter University

Excluding children from school may lead to long- term psychiatric problems and psychological distress, a study of thousands of children has shown.

Research by the University of Exeter, published in the journal Psychological Medicine found that a new onset mental disorder may be a consequence of exclusion from school.

The study also found that – separately – poor mental health can lead to exclusion from school.

Young people's happiness and confidence at record low, Prince’s Trust study finds young people's happiness and confidence levels are at a record low as concern around lack of job opportunities mounts, a survey has found. The Prince's Trust's annual youth index measures young people's happiness and confidence across a range of areas, including their health and career prospects, attributing an overall score out of 100 based on the responses to a series of survey questions. This year the overall index score was 69, making it the first time since the index launched in 2009 that it has fallen below 70. Almost half (44 per cent) of the more than 2,000 young people aged between 16 and 25 who were surveyed said they feared there would be fewer job opportunities for their generation over the next three years.
