Serious Games Training Opportunity from the Devon Safeguarding Children Board

The DSCB have invested in 3 of the serious games:  Looking out for Lottie (Child Sexual Exploitation), Zak (Radicalisation) and Rosie 2 – Neglect.  Zak and Lottie are suitable for using with both young people and professionals and look at the world through the eyes of the young people using social media.  Rosie 2 is aimed at professionals, giving them the opportunity to consider and discuss a  number of complex child protection issues through a range of scenes.

All the simulations provide research-based case studies and the opportunities to explore the complex dynamics involved in making professional assessments of risk and decisions in these contexts.  They are an engaging and immersive way of delivering training which can take place in one to one or small group situations and sessions can be tailored to be very short, focussing on one issue, or run over a half or full day, exploring a wide range of issues.  This method is ideal for using at a team meeting or during a training day in either a single or multi-agency environment.

The DSCB are training a new cohort of trainers who are very keen to deliver these exciting training opportunities.  We will be arranging sessions to deliver this material and you are invited to book yourself on in the usual way.  Date can be found on our website as they come up.  If you would like to explore this further, or arrange a tailored session to be delivered at your venue, please contact Sally Yeo in the DSCB office.

'Right for Children' IT System

Early Help describes the range of support that can be offered in response to the emerging needs of children, young people and families.  When a child's needs increase, more than one service may be required to meet their needs.  Early Help is the name given to the way services work together, in a co-ordinated way to support the child, young person and their family. Early Help is good practice, not a process or a service and is what most practitioners are already doing – supporting families when need emerges and recognising and acting when children and/or families need some extra help or support.

‘Right for Children’, the new Early Help IT system is now live. The system replaces the previous ‘Holistix’ system, and see’s the introduction of more streamlined Early Help assessment and planning tools that are online based.

Information on the Early Help Offer in Devon and how to access the new ‘Right For Children’ IT system is available on the our website - just click here.

Consultation

Complex Lives – Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse

Devon County Council commissions and provides a range of statutory and non-statutory provision and interventions for people with support needs in relation to domestic and sexual violence and abuse. We have recently redrafted our strategy which aims to end Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse using a range of methodologies including; ethnographic research, interviews with people working in the system, a perpetrator focus group and a number of pieces of work to supplement our comprehensive 2013 Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse Joint Strategic needs Assessment. We have drafted a Domestic and Sexual Violence and Abuse Service Specification, that responds to our strategy and helps move us towards our aim.

The key changes to the proposed provision are outlined in the overview of changes document below, and reflect the main themes which emerged from people’s stories and from feedback from a range of stakeholders.

Please note the consultation will close at 12 noon on 3 July.
