This interactive workshop offers an introduction to the subject of young people’s mental health, and offers a general overview of this huge issue which is affecting larger numbers of young people every year. It provides an opportunity to discuss the subject openly and safely and is suitable both for those with no awareness of this subject, as well as those supporting young people with this type of behaviour.
This session is not intended to provide clinical information about the numerous mental health issues that can affect young people’s lives, but rather seeks to increase understanding and awareness around mental illness in its wider context, and thereby help those of us working with young people to be better placed to spot the signs of mental distress and offer positive help and support.
Opportunities will be given to reflect on personal attitudes towards mental health issues and in doing so, dispel some of the myths and taboos that surround the subject.
This series of workshops will look at:
- What is mental health?
- Understanding stress and trauma;
- Common mental health issues affecting young people;
- Spotting the signs and symptoms of mental ill health and offering support;
- Risk factors contributing to young people’s mental health issues and the impact of COVID-19;
- The self-esteem crisis;
- The impact of stigma;
- Building resilience in young people – and ourselves!
- Mental health resources and signposting.
