In these two 1.25 hour workshops we offer an introduction to the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) on young people’s mental health, and the potential long-term consequences. These interactive sessions seek to increase participants’ understanding and awareness of the many threats and challenges currently facing young people, both from within and outside the home, and help them to be better placed to spot the signs of mental distress, abuse and trauma, feel more confident in how to respond, and offer practical and positive help and support.  With COVID currently having a significant and traumatic impact on young people’s lives, this workshop has never been more needed to help safeguard their wellbeing and build resilience to deal with life’s many difficulties.

Session 1 (28 April 2021 6.30 pm – 7.45 pm)

  • New research and ways of understanding mental ill health and trauma.
  • The lifetime impact of early adversity on children’s outcomes (ACEs).
  • Extra-familial harm – the risks facing young people outside the home (including criminal and sexual exploitation, youth violence and relationship abuse) and their consequences.
  • The principles of trauma-informed care, and how it can help.

Session 2 (5 May 2021 6.30 pm – 7.45 pm)

  • Responding to a young person experiencing mental distress.
  • Building resilience to help young people cope.
  • How to provide supportive and nurturing services for young people experiencing ACEs and trauma.
  • Positive ways to ‘close the loop’ in the negative cycles trauma can bring to families.
